What Can I Do?
There are things you can do to reduce negative feelings, increase positive feelings, build confidence, and improve your quality of life. You can make small changes that contribute to better emotional health.

Talk with a trusted friend, family member, or someone with heart failure. The simple act of sharing a problem or worrying out loud may make symptoms more manageable and less overwhelming. Make a list of things you can and cannot do and use it as a guide for talking with your friends and family about how your condition impacts your life. Reaching out to family and friends can be comforting and help overcome isolation.
Join a support group for patients with heart failure or heart disease. Some people find it helpful to discuss their feelings with people who have similar problems. Exercise regularly to reduce feelings of stress, anger, depression, and anxiety. Try to get outside every day even for a few minutes. Getting fresh air can clear your mind and soothe the mood. Talk to your doctor about the activities and intensities that are right for you.
Get a good night’s sleep. Research has shown that people who do not feel rested or do not get enough sleep often feel depressed. If you have difficulty sleeping, ask your doctor or nurse about getting good sleep. You might discuss sleep hygiene, medications, or testing for sleep disorders like sleep apnea.
Try a new activity you might enjoy. Many people with heart failure find that starting a new activity can help keep their mind off their symptoms. You can try volunteering with an organization or participating in heart failure support groups.
Take an active role in your own health by learning more about heart failure. Increasing your knowledge about self-care can improve your heart failure symptoms and help you feel more in control. Learn more about your condition and participate in its management.
