Identify Early Symptoms
Explore each section to learn more.
Early symptoms may seem small, but they’re worth recognizing and tracking. Minor changes in how you feel are helpful warning signs that attention may be needed.
Pay attention and tell your healthcare team about your symptoms as soon as you have them. Treating symptoms before they are urgent can help you feel better.
Call your healthcare professional if you notice:
- Rapid weight gain
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling in the legs, feet, hands, or abdomen
- Trouble sleeping
- Frequent dry, hacking cough
- Loss of appetite
- Increasing fatigue or or feeling tired all the time
These common symptoms are early signs that fluid is building up and that your body is producing harmful substances (stress hormones) that worsen heart failure.
These symptoms may be caused by the heart failure or by your heart failure medications. Either way, your healthcare professional may be able to help decrease or get rid of the symptoms before they escalate into an emergency.
