For organizations in all kinds of industries, the speed and reliability of cloud databases have made it possible to harness the power of data to improve customer service, make better-informed decisions, and spur innovation. As database demands grow over time, however, older infrastructure can have a difficult time keeping up with larger volumes of data, ever-increasing performance requirements, and the challenges of well-equipped competition. Newer on-premises cloud solutions—with updated hardware and software—can put data-driven businesses in a good position to handle future growth by providing improved database performance and the capacity to meet greater demand.
To see how one on-premises cloud infrastructure upgrade can improve critical database performance measures like transactional database throughput and storage-related latency, we compared the online transaction processing (OLTP) performance of a cluster of 16th Generation Dell PowerEdge R760 servers running VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 5.1 to that of a cluster of 15th Generation Dell PowerEdge R750 servers running VCF 4.5. In our tests, we found that the PowerEdge R760 cluster running VCF 5.1 processed over 78 percent more transactions per minute and 79 percent more new orders per minute than the PowerEdge R750 cluster running VCF 4.5. In addition, the R760 cluster delivered lower vSAN average latencies than the R750 cluster, which means that admins could expect consistently lower read and write response times after upgrading from the older to the newer solution.
For companies that are struggling to keep up with database performance demands while using clusters of older Dell PowerEdge servers with a previous version of VMware VCF, upgrading to 16th Gen PowerEdge servers running VCF 5.1 could provide a performance boost that gives them the database horsepower to welcome future growth with confidence.
