For many organizations, data repositories function as core assets—the bread and butter of the enterprise. Whether that data supports internal research and operations or drives public-facing apps and services, it needs to be safe from a growing range of potential threats. From guarding against malware and ransomware attacks to the constant possibility of file corruption, accidental deletion, infrastructure failure, and more, the task of data protection is more complex than ever. For protection strategies to be successful in a multi-threat world, they require a multi-faceted approach that equips administrators with broadly compatible tools and multiple options for implementation. Proactive, machine learning (ML) powered threat scanning, multi-copy backups, isolated recovery vaults, and rapid post-event restoration are all examples of the types of capabilities that contribute to state-of-the-art data defense. All also require hardware and software solutions that are up to the task.
We conducted a deep-dive analysis of publicly available information on two enterprise data protection and cyber recovery solutions—Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery and Rubrik Secure Cloud—to see how both solutions approach data management, protection, and recovery. Our research covered the details of each product’s feature support, platform compatibility, ease of setup and use, maintenance, threat scanning technology, and recovery options.
We found that Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery offered significant features that Rubrik Secure Cloud lacked. Some features that stood out were the ability to support more anomaly workload scans, the use of optional air gap strategies for physically isolating backups, ML-based CyberSense analytics to check the integrity of vault data, and multiple recovery options that use clean vault data to make a smooth and efficient return to operations. With those types of advantages, Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery could provide many companies with a potentially more robust data protection solution capable of minimizing downtime resulting from adverse events and speeding up recovery when they occur.
