Over the past few years, more people have found themselves in hybrid or remote work environments than ever before. For many professionals who’ve adapted their workflows to non-traditional workspaces, the era of going into the office every day is history. Even those going back to the office are frequently working from many different locations. What hasn’t changed for all workers is the need to deliver top-notch work—whether you pull projects together in a home office, a ride-share vehicle, or a packed airplane.
Regardless of where people end up doing their work, it’s important that their laptops have all the necessary elements to encourage mobile productivity. A high-performing laptop may generate excess heat and fan noise. A cool and quiet laptop may not have the power to handle demanding tasks. And longer battery life is always welcome. An ideal business laptop will strike a great balance—providing real performance chops without sacrificing battery life or user comfort.
We had this balance in mind when, in two separate studies, we used a variety of benchmarks, battery life tests, and thermal and acoustic measurements to compare the performance, portability, and user experience of two sets of lightweight business laptops. In the first study, we compared a Dell Latitude 7340 Ultralight Laptop to a Dynabook Portégé X30L-K. The Latitude 7340 produced better performance benchmark scores than the Portégé X30L-K, and it did so while using less or nearly equivalent battery life. The Latitude 7340 also offered 17.0 percent more battery life per watt-hour than the Portégé X30L-K, ran about 20 degrees (F) cooler on the keyboard deck, and delivered comparable acoustic outputs under an intensive workload.
In the second study, we compared a Dell Latitude 7440 Ultralight Laptop to a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11. The Latitude 7440 achieved performance equivalent to or better than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon across multiple benchmarks, while requiring minimal to no additional battery life to do so. The Dell system also delivered over 12 hours of battery life—almost two hours longer than the Lenovo system—and it ran cooler and quieter in our tests.
Our results show that with the Dell Latitude 7430 Ultralight Laptop and Dell Latitude 7440 Ultralight Laptop, users can gain performance advantages without taking a hit to battery life or personal comfort. Both systems could be a smart choice for a remote, hybrid, or highly mobile workforce.
