Data center growth is showing no signs of slowing down, and the tectonic shifts of the AI revolution are starting to place new levels of demand on existing data center infrastructure and management practices. As companies invest in hardware upgrades to position themselves for success in tomorrow’s AI-infused economy, it’s important to evaluate a broader range of factors than just performance and price when making server purchasing decisions. Enhanced security, robust energy management tools, and extensive system management and monitoring controls are features that can continue to pay off in multiple ways for years to come.

In an in-depth study, we compared the capabilities of a Dell iDRAC9 embedded and remote server management portfolio to the baseboard management controller (BMC) capabilities of a competitor we called Vendor K. We also compared Dell OpenManage Enterprise (OME) to Vendor K’s enterprise management console for one-to-many device and console management. Finally, we looked at some of the features and benefits of the Dell APEX AIOps Infrastructure Observability cloud-based monitoring tool.

We found that the Dell iDRAC9, OME, and APEX AIOps Infrastructure Observability solution offered a feature-rich family of management tools that can better enhance security, bolster practical sustainability measures, and simplify day-to-day admin tasks compared to using similar tools from Vendor K. The Dell portfolio offered security features—including dynamic system lockdown and multifactor authentication—that the Vendor K BMC didn't offer, as well as far more granular energy consumption and thermal management controls. Additionally, the Dell server management portfolio offered more automation and remote management options than Vendor K, reducing administrator time and effort for some routine monitoring and maintenance tasks.

These advantages in security, sustainability, and management and monitoring features make the Dell server management portfolio an attractive option for organizations growing their server capabilities.
