With their space-saving and energy-efficient designs, small form factor (SFF) PCs are the computing solution of choice for many work environments—such as healthcare, manufacturing settings, temporary office space, retail, and security—where widely distributed employees need reliable system access. The variety of industries that benefit from the practical advantages of SFF PCs all have at least one thing in common—at some point they'll face decisions about whether to adopt new AI-integrated workloads and applications that could help improve individual productivity and potentially multiply the number of valuable insights they extract from their data. To be ready for an AI-boosted future, those businesses will need systems that can handle tomorrow’s increased processing demands without sacrificing the advantages that SFF PCs provide.
We used industry-standard benchmarks to compare the AI, graphics, and daily productivity performance of two sets of similarly configured HP Elite SFF 805 G9 Desktop PCs and Dell OptiPlex SFF Plus Desktop PCs. In the first set of comparisons, the HP Elite 805 SFF G9 featured an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 8600G processor equipped with a neural processor unit (NPU) and 16 GB of RAM, while the Dell OptiPlex SFF Plus featured an Intel vPro with Intel Core i5-14500 processor and 16 GB of RAM. In the second set of comparisons, the HP Elite 805 SFF G9 featured an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G processor equipped with an NPU and 32 GB of RAM, while the Dell OptiPlex SFF Plus featured an Intel vPro with Intel Core i7-14700 processor and 32 GB of RAM. In addition to running the benchmarks, we also monitored each system’s power consumption during a 30-minute Microsoft Teams video meeting that included a large PowerPoint presentation.
In all our comparisons, we found that the HP Elite SFF 805 G9 systems powered by an NPU-equipped AMD Ryzen PRO 8600G or 8700G processor outperformed the Dell OptiPlex SFF Plus systems with Intel vPro with Intel Core i5-14500 or i7-14700 processors. We also found that both versions of the HP Elite SFF PCs we tested used less energy than either of the Dell OptiPlex SFF Plus PCs during video call tests.
Our findings suggest that HP Elite SFF 805 G9 Desktop PCs with an NPU-equipped AMD Ryzen PRO 8000G Series processor can be a strong choice for businesses that want to help their team leverage the potentially revolutionary capabilities of resource-intensive future workloads—while still reaping the practical benefits of SFF efficiency.
